The 15 member Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) helps the Post Office to decide what subjects are chosen for new stamps.
The American public submits thousands of roposals each year.
Appointed by the Postmaster General, CSAC members share an interest in the needs of the mailing public. CSAC’s
primary goal is to recommend subjects – both educational and interesting – to the Postmaster General. EVERY stamp suggestion is
considered, regardless of who makes it or how it is presented. About 25 new subjects for commemorative stamps are recommended her year. Once a subject is selected for a stamp, it could end up anywhere – a letter, flat, even an art gallery wall.
The CSAC meets 4 times a year in Washington, DC. At the meetings, members review all new proposals since the last
meeting. NO in-person appeals by stamp proponents are permitted.
Other than for information, stamps can be fundraisers as well. Consider the Breast Cancer stamp that debuted in
July of 1998. It has raised about $32 million with the sale of over 450 million stamps.
